Biography

Annette completed her doctoral degree in veterinary medicine at the Vetmeduni Vienna in Austria in 2009.

During her studies she already worked as research assistant for the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES, Vienna, Austria) and, later on as expert in the veterinary field for the State Government of Vorarlberg (Bregenz, Austria). Her main duties covered control of infectious disease in livestock, epidemiological analyses of animal health data, planning and administration of surveillance programmes, contingency planning and project-based scientific work.

She moved to London in 2009 to start her 3-year residency programme of the European College of Veterinary Public Health. This training included placements at the European Commission (DG SANCO, Brussels, Belgium), Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs / Defra (London / UK) and the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency / AHVLA  (Weybride / UK).

Currently she is enrolled in the MSc Veterinary Epidemiology.

Research

Annette's research focuses on control and epidemiology of notifiable pig diseases (Classical Swine Fever, African Swine Fever, Aujeszky's Disease and Swine Vesicular Disease). Her studies include modelling of disease outbreaks, alternative disease control options and animal health economics.

Her last project was in the field of food safety; as part of an international research group she evaluated the effectiveness of current meat inspection practices for red meat species and risks to public health, animal health and animal welfare.

Teaching

Annette has been involved in the teaching of undergraduate BVetMed students at the RVC, specifically in the areas of international animal health, control of food-borne disease, meat inspection and abattoir-based surveillance.
