The aim of Alma's PhD research is to evaluate which factors influence livestock owners' access to East Coast fever control in Tanzania, and how this information could be used to improve disease control policies. She is supervised by Decland McKeever and Jonathan Rushton at the RVC, and Paul Gwakisa from Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania.
Biography
Alma graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Veterinary Sciences in 2008 from the Royal Veterinary College. She then obtained a masters in Veterinary Epidemiology in 2009 from the Royal Veterinary College and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
She worked as a research assistant in the Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health Group at the college between January 2010- September 2011, before starting a PhD.
Research
Previously Alma has been involved in research projects looking at the economic viability of East Coast fever control in endemic regions in Africa, the cost effectiveness of avian influenza surveillance systems in Egypt, the economic feasibility of risk reduction in disease transmission from live animal exports from Somalia, and opportunities and constraints in small scale commercial broiler and layer farms in selected case study countries in Africa.
Alma has a keen interest in livestock disease control for the benefit of food safety and food security in developing countries.
