Centre for Animal Welfare
Introduction
The Centre for Animal Welfare was established in 2005 in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at the Royal Veterinary College with an initial focus on research on the welfare of farm animals. Over time, we will broaden activities to include companion, laboratory and zoo animals.
The Centre for Animal Welfare adopts an interdisciplinary approach to answering fundamental questions about how animals perceive and process information about their world and the implications of this for their management, as well as tackling the science and application of welfare assessment.
The Centre for Animal Welfare aims to translate good science into practical application by working with farmers, policy makers, food processors and retailers, and welfare charities, thereby raising the standards of animal welfare on the farm, during transport and at the abattoir. We are also committed to open communication with all members of society about our work.
Facilities
The Centre for Animal Welfare has excellent research facilities for study the environmental biology and management of farm and other animals. A new state-of-the-art barn was built and commissioned during 2006. It provides a unique capability for research with farm animals and features state-of-the-art environmental control and monitoring systems.
