RVC Polo Club 2008
RVC Polo was set up in 2005 under the Countryside and Rural Affairs Association. This is the first year we have been our own club! We have members who have never sat on a horse let alone held a polo stick to those that play regularly. The majority are total beginners. We train at Hertfordshire Polo Club (near Potters Bar) and get a student discount on lessons/membership.
As a club, we strongly feel that anyone who wants to play should have the opportunity to regardless of their financial situation. We want to select teams on merit and not on who can pay; this is dependant on funding and sponsorship.
Royal Veterinary College Mens Football Team
We have between thirty and fourty members with two teams entered in the ULU leagues. The first team play in the ULU first division and are currently joint top of the league. The first team have progressed well over recent years coming 7th in 05/06 and 5th in 06/07 in the first division. The second team play in the fourth division in which they are currrently 8th.
We were granted £2000 this year and combined with money raised through £10 subs per player per year and various other fund raisers. We have three subsidised socials for freshers, Christmas dinner, and end of season celebrations. We also have a tour where we go to Belgium and Holland and play other vet college football teams where we managed to win the Cureghem cup against the Liege. We also play two friendly matches in the summer term Camden Hawkshead and Old boys are a good opportunity to keep up team spirits out of season.
The squad is growing and succeeding at the same time providing an opportunity far all years and courses to play football and socialise.

RVC Women’s Rugby
The RVC WRFC currently fields one team, though regularly has trains with 20-30 girls. We play in the ULU Women’s Rugby Premier League and the ULU Women’s Challenge Cup. We have remained in the highest level ULU league for the past several years, not being knocked off the winning position for at least the past 4 years.
RVC Farm Animal Clinical Club (FACC)
Since the society was set up in September 07 we have held many successful events and have laid down very clear targets for the future including the 'Farm to Fork' scheme. With the aid of much needed funding this scheme will begin in September 08 aiming at helping students gain extra farm work experience. Professor Brian Aldridge is involved in the scheme and has clear aspirations to make this successful.
ROWING
Most years (including this year) we have three women's VIIIs and two men's, as well as a IV, shared between the two squads. No leagues as such are in operation at present although the University of London Boat Club are in the process of devising such a setup. Being a London medical college however, we are members of United Hospitals Boat Club (UHBC), which provides both competetive and social opportunities.
RVC Riding Team
This year we have three riding teams for the first ever time. All compete in BUSA leagues, the 1st team competing in the Championship League with the 2nd and 3rd teams both competing in the Trophy league. Both leagues go through to regional rounds, the winner of each qualifying for the National Championships.
RVC Riding Club
The riding club was formed (or possibly re-formed) three years ago in response to the large demand for riding for those people who are not on the teams. This year, we have our largest-ever member base, with around 60 active members, and a mailing list of 200. This is also the first year we’ve had a full committee, which has allowed us to organise more activities for the club.
The most frequent activity that we organise is arranging lessons and hacks through local parkland at Trent Park Equestrian Centre every week, which allows anyone to ride, from a total beginner to advanced riders wanting to continue whilst at uni. We also have casual socials (at the pub!) during term time.
Netball club
as a club we arrange several socials and on 9th Feb 08 we held our annual event "Rugby-netball" this was well organised by our social sec , Ami Cooper. it was a complete success. all monies used for these type of events are from within the club, via subs and players. we dont arrange any fundraising activities. every week we hold a training session for the whole club
Behavioural Club
Success: Recently we organised a behavioural weekend which attracted 200 students, CABSTG support as well as support from RVC's resident behaviourist, Jon Bowen. We have affiliation with Nottingham vetschool. We are in the process of trying to secure sponsorship to get our website up and running - as this will be one of the central resources for the society.
Wishlist: we would ideally like some sponsorship or some funding to get the website to a level which makes it informative and professional, reflecting our desire to make this society a national organisation. We hope that this society spurs on the introduction of more behaviour-based teaching to the veterinary students of the RVC. Any funds would also contribute towards monthly lectures and a seminar series that would allow students to access some of this fundamental information.
RVC Clay Pigeon Shooting Teams (CSRA)
19th Jan ’08 – RVC hosted competition at Broomhills Shooting Ground against the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. Included 22 RVC members, and a mix of officers, instructors, dog handlers (captained by Miles Malone, one of the founders of the RVC CPST)
23rd Feb ’08 – BUSA National Championships which we shall be entering 2 men’s and 1 women’s team, and 4 individuals (we would like a 2nds women team but this year there isn’t this category in the competition).
19th April ’08 – Old Boys competition which will include a black tie cocktail party afterwards.
We are also looking for dates that the army can have a reciprocal event up at Melton Mowbray, and also a date to trial a competition against the Imperial University Clay Shooting Team.
Next academic year we hope to attend the St Andrews University Shooting Competition in November, as well as a competition hosted by Plymouth University Clay Shooting Team in March.
Zoological Society
We are very proud to have the largest number of people on our mailing list out of any club at the college (>200).
82 people joined at the freshers fair alone last year (at a reduced price of £10) with many more joining throughout the year (at £12 for a years membership).
We also have some MSc students and staff on our mailing list.
Our BLE site is one of the best and most maintained.
Our objective is to fill the gap in our curriculum regarding medicine and care of exotic species, conservation and ecological issues.
RVC SU Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transexual (LGBT) Society
This is the first year that the LBGT Society has been active in supporting students. At the freshers fair we had many more students than we anticipated signing up which was encouraging. Our first social was an introduction to Soho aimed at the freshers, which was well received. Since then I’ve produced a leaflet containing important advice about STDs, GUM clinics, Help-lines etc. We’ve had a couple more informal socials this term in order to fulfil the much needed role of providing a support network to students who need gay/lesbian friends to confide in, and these involved several straight students which was a positive step. Coming up is a day organised to highlight support amongst RVC students/staff for LGBT rights. And I’d really like us to be represented in the London Pride procession this summer.
RVC Hockey Club
Women's 2's have been promoted in both of their leagues recently, but unfortunately the mens have been relegated from theirs (50% of the team is new this year). Two years ago, the mens team won the ULU Reserve's Cup.
The club has also organised two successful tours (to Madrid and Prague) and also regularly organise socials.
We have been fund raising this year to buy two new goal keeping kits, and also wish to buy new club shirt for all three teams. Our annual dinner and raffle (prizes kindly donated by ACT) raised over £350 and we plan more fund raising event for the summer term
Our current financial situation is nt the best it could be. We are probably the biggest sports club, with over 50 members, and as such have high overheards - weekly pitch and umpire taking most of the £4500 allocated by th su, leaving us little for new kit etc.
Our fundamental wish is to be able to buy new shirts for all three teams
