Careers Fair
The RVC Careers Fair will take place on Thursday 15th April 2010
The RVC’s third annual careers fair will take place on 15th April between 5.30 and 7.00pm.
We’re hoping to build on the success of last year’s fair which was attended by 10 exhibitors from large corporations as well as small animal practices. Exhibitors had the opportunity to see the quality of the RVC’s soon-to-be qualified vets and discuss with them the issues new graduates face when entering employment. This then enabled them to think about how they could address these concerns in their graduate programmes.
The event was also extremely beneficial for over 100 of our students who attended, in particular for BVetMed 5th Year and final year BSc and Foundation Degree Vet Nurses.
Careers Fairs are an important resource for graduate appointments – even if students don’t get a job as a direct result of the fair, they’re still taking steps towards their chosen career and moving closer to recruitment in their perfect job. It is an excellent opportunity for them to meet potential employers face to face and market themselves, whilst gaining an insight to available careers and the support and guidance offered to new graduates by different graduate schemes.
A suitable job can be difficult to find, and with the amount of competition vying for graduate appointments today's graduates have to use every avenue they can to maximise their chances of finding the right job. The career's fair will help them with:
- Honing interview skills – Even if they aren’t offered a job, talking to prospective employers about graduate vacancies gives students valuable confidence and experience of interviews.
- Expanding their network – Meeting job recruiters helps to build useful contacts for future reference.
- Gathering information about companies – Investigating the kind of jobs offered by a company tells you a lot about that organisation as a whole.
Employers will be attending the fair for many reasons: to promote the vacancies that they have to a large audience of students, to provide more information about the company as well as the positions available, to talk to individual students and help them determine which positions they might want to apply for and to spot candidates that they would like to see applying for their vacancies.
So far this year BVA have already signed up to return and we are now looking for more exhibitors to come along and speak to our graduates. The current final year students would be especially interested in speaking to previous graduates about their experiences of practice and how they got to wherever they may be now.
If you would like to come along to this year’s careers fair with your practice and speak to our graduates contact Susan Law on slaw@rvc.ac.uk for further details.
