Neurology and Neurosurgery

The Neurology and Neurosurgery Service provides routine and emergency referral services for veterinary surgeons in general practice. The service covers areas of both medical and surgical neurology in small animals. The service offers routine appointments, with a clinician coordinating and receiving emergency cases. Diagnostic procedures are available for the investigation of spinal, intracranial and neuromuscular disorders. Surgical facilities are available for treatment of lesions in all three of these systems.

Caseload includes the investigation and treatment of:

  • Intervertebral disc disease
  • Wobbler syndrome
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Intracranial neoplasia
  • Inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system
  • Spinal fractures
  • Seizures

Investigation of neuromuscular disorders is enhanced by a state of the art diagnostic electrophysiological unit, an MRI scanner at the hospital, a CT scanner and two radiology suites.

The Neurology and Neurosurgery Service offers a comprehensive service for the diagnosis and treatment of intracranial neoplasia. Postoperative nursing is an essential component in the successful treatment of intervertebral disc disease and spinal trauma. The Queen Mother Hospital for Animals has a large team of dedicated surgical nurses and facilities to provide this care.
