Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation
Just like people, many pets recovering from illness or surgery, and those with long standing conditions such as arthritis can benefit from physiotherapy and rehabilitation programmes. These are designed to speed up the return to health and mobility, sometimes reducing the need for medication or avoiding the need for surgery. At the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals (QMHA) we offer a complete range of programmes for cats and dogs under the supervision of a qualified veterinary physiotherapist, tailored to your pet’s individual needs.
To make an appointment with our physiotherapy and rehabilitation service you will need to be referred by your usual vet, who will book an appointment on your behalf and provide us with your pet's full clinical history.
Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy have long formed an integral part of the post-operative care of many patients in the QMHA, and our team approach to rehabilitation, in which specialist vets, nurses and physios work together, ensure the best possible outcome for your animals. Out-patient referral services for both these specialities are also now available.
Physiotherapy
Pets respond particularly well to the gentle, non-invasive approach of physiotherapy, which can help to:
- reduce pain and promote healing
- increase muscle strength and joint flexibility
- improve movement, balance and co-ordination
Treatment in the early stages after injury is most beneficial, and ensures a more satisfactory outcome in most cases. Physiotherapy is not an alternative, but a valuable adjunct to other veterinary treatments.
Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy is a well-recognised therapy for both people and animals. The water gives a weightless environment to allow muscles and limbs to be exercised without unnecessary strain.
Swimming is often used as part of a planned programme for pre and post surgical cases, as well as being very effective as a fitness regime and in weight loss management. In many cases swimming is alongside physiotherapy and improvements can be seen very quickly.
