Introduction

Originally established in 1986, The Queen Mother Hospital for Animals (QMHA) based near Potters Bar, Hertfordshire has undergone several major developments and is now the largest and a most highly regarded small animal referral teaching Hospital in the UK.

The Hospital is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and has qualified Veterinary Surgeons and Nurses on site at all times to receive emergencies.

The QMHA employs over 200 dedicated, passionate and enthusiastic members of staff including almost 50 Senior Clinicians, 25 of whom Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Registered Specialist Clinicians, all of whom are not only leading experts in their fields but have devoted their lives to the advancement of veterinary medicine and improving the health and wellbeing of animals. These Senior Clinicians are supported in their work by up to 20 experienced and knowledgeable Veterinary Clinicians undergoing advanced specialist training keeping them at the forefront of their profession.

Our 57-strong nursing team includes some of the most experienced and qualified Nurses in the UK, many with RCVS Advanced Nursing Diplomas and two with additional American Veterinary Technician Specialist qualifications in Emergency and Critical Care and Cardiology. Both were the first Nurses in the UK to gain these prestigious qualifications. The nursing team provide unrivalled care for patients around the clock so you can rest assured that your pet is in the best possible hands.

Everyone at the QMHA cares about your pet. With over 90% of our staff owning pets themselves, we know and understand how important and valuable they are to you. This is something that both as individuals and as a Hospital we try never to lose sight of.

The Hospital receives over 7,000 referred patients annually, from Veterinary Practices all over the country, and our team is committed to providing both referring Vets and their clients with the highest quality service, in an efficient, effective and empathetic way using the most advanced techniques and equipment.

The QMHA teams

All clinical and non-clinical staff are dedicated to providing the best possible care for our clients’ pets and take great pride in the level of highly specialised care they offer. The depth and breadth of experience and knowledge within the hospital is second-to-none.

Our Clinicians and Veterinary Nurses are organised into specialist services and teams, each lead by Clinicians qualified to the highest level, supported by experienced colleagues at different stages of their specialised training.

It is important to note that when your pet is referred to us for a second opinion, you may be seen by any member of the dedicated Service team, and not necessarily the Head of the Service. However, you can be assured that every referral case is reviewed by Senior Clinicians.
