Self-funded PhD Projects

Funding required
The annual tuition fee in will be £3,390 (2010/11 rate, 2012 rate tbc) for a home/EU student and £20,270 for an overseas student; fees normally rise by approximately 3% per annum (for information on fee status, please see http://www.ukcosa.org.uk/student/fees_student_support.php). It is currently estimated that a single student requires at least £12,000 per year to cover accommodation and personal maintenance expenses whilst studying in or near to London. Normally, a bench fee will also be payable. The amount charged annually will vary considerably depending on the nature of the project and applicants should contact the Graduate School (gradschool@rvc.ac.uk) for further information about the fee associated with the project that they intend to apply for.
2012:Fees Bursary for applicants from non UK/EU countries
Bursaries of £5,000 are available on a competitive basis to applicants for PhD studentships in areas of strategic importance to RVC. Candidates will be selected for a bursary based on the information supplied in their postgraduate application form/curriculum vitae and at an interview, which can be held by telephone or video conference link.
Qualifications
The normal minimum entrance qualification for PhD registration is one of the following:
- An upper second class honours degree from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, in a subject relevant to the project
- A masters degree in a subject relevant to the project
- A registered qualification in medicine or veterinary studies
- A professional qualification obtained by written examination and approved by the University of London as an appropriate entrance qualification.
Where the applicant's first language is not English, s/he will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English language. In the IELTS test an overall band score of at least 7.0 must be obtained, together with a minimum of 6.5 in each of the four individual components. In the TOEFL test, a score at least 93 (internet-based test), 580 (paper-based test) or 237 (computer-based test) must be achieved. The results of these tests are valid for up to two years after issue.
