About Clinical Training
In the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, opportunities include:
- One-year Junior Clinical Training Scholar programmes (internships)
- Three-year Senior Clinical Training Scholar programmes (residencies).
The Department of Pathology and Infectious Diseases also offers a range of postgraduate clinical training programmes. These include three-year Senior Clinical Training Scholar programmes (residencies) in both clinical pathology and anatomic pathology.
Opportunities exist for scholars to spend time on placement in other diagnostic laboratories or clinical centres to broaden their experience.
You will receive full-time clinical training under the direct supervision of specialist academic staff, spending between 75 and 85 per cent of your time engaged in supervised clinical activities, and the remainder on a related research topic. Clinical training is through the management of cases under the supervision of specialist academic staff.

The large and diverse caseload of the College’s hospitals will ensure that you are exposed to every facet of clinical problem-solving and the management of clinical problems.
All Scholars are expected to get involved in our research activities, including developing a prospective clinical research project allied to one of the College’s research themes. You will also be expected to attend and participate in regular meetings, seminars, tutorials and lectures. For pathologists, these include a weekly meeting in anatomic or clinical pathology.
Our Senior Clinical Training Scholarships equip candidates to work at a specialist level in their chosen field, and provide appropriate exposure to the clinical caseload. They are designed to make sure that the scholarly activity you engage in meets the criteria for accreditation, and to prepare you thoroughly for a specialist diploma examination.
All Clinical Training Scholars are registered with, and their scholarship is administered through, the Graduate School.
