Inside Nature’s Giants
RVC experts feature in Channel 4 science documentary
29 June 2009
A four part science documentary Inside Nature’s Giants begins this month, offering a fascinating insight into the animal kingdom and the way in which species have evolved over past centuries.
The series was made in association with RVC, and uses dissection, CGI and wildlife photography to show from the inside out, how four species – the elephant, giraffe, crocodile and whale have evolved to prosper in their natural habitats.
Alun Williams, Professor of Pathology and Infectious Diseases, features in the series and comments on the College’s involvement:
“Three of the animals featured came to RVC for the purpose of post-mortem examinations, which gave the opportunity to study their anatomy in detail. This provides our students and staff a unique experience in being able to witness and participate in the post mortem of large wild animals – an opportunity that doesn’t very often happen even in the life of a vet.
The series also helps us as veterinary scientists and educators to demonstrate why wild animals are so fascinating and why it is important that they survive as well as giving the public an understanding of the varied jobs that a veterinary education could lead to.
RVC is able to use the material that has been donated to further our understanding of how animals move and live and thus help to improve their lives and environment”.
Inside Natures Giant’s begins on Monday 29th June at 9pm on Channel 4 and runs for four weeks. See Inside Nature's Giants on the Channel 4's website where you can watch previous episodes on 4oD as well as get more information about the series.
