Practice Management Fundamentals Elective Programme
RVC’s Practice Management Fundamentals elective aims to inspire veterinary students to become business-interested. This is critical as around 80% of graduates will work in a small veterinary business, and around half of these vets will go on to own part or all of a business. In order to provide exceptional veterinary care and offer value for money to clients, the business and enterprise skills of vets must be developed.
More than a dozen entrepreneurial veterinary practitioners deliver 2-hour “masterclass sessions during the 2-week veterinary Practice Management Fundamentals elective programme. Speakers deliver sessions on diverse topics such veterinary business strategy, pricing, accounting, market research, career planning, public relations, HR law, and business creativity.
The attendance on the elective has doubled over recent years, and student feedback has been excellent.
“I chose the business elective because I knew very little about business beforehand and one day I want to open my own practice. The week gave a great overview of many subjects relating to entrepreneurship and inspired us all to be more business minded when we go into practice. The many different speakers gave us lots of ideas for our own future practices but also what we can do for the practices we work for. It was a very valuable week and something I will be highlighting on my CV. Attendee on 2008 Practice Management Elective.
“I found that when I went for my interviews future employers were genuinely interested in the [practice management] elective and it was definitely looked upon favourably. Attendee on 2008 Practice Management Elective.
