Information for Referring Veterinary Surgeons

We endeavour to facilitate effective and efficient communications between Referring Veterinary Surgeons and the Equine Referral Hospital and have instigated a number of procedures to ensure you can contact us:

Referrals can be taken via phone, e-mail or fax

Should you have an enquiry regarding one of your cases and wish to speak to our clinicians, please contact the hospital by phone. Reception staff will endeavour to immediately transfer your call to the relevant clinician. If this is not possible, a message will be taken and the clinician will contact you as soon as possible. If the clinician you wish to speak to is not on clinical duty, another clinician will respond to your enquiry.

Changes in the patient's care that require discussion will, of course, take place between the clinician and the client. Clients with hospitalised horses are updated at least daily to advise them on the clinical progress of their horse.

Case Reports

Discharge instructions will be given to the owner and faxed to the Referring Veterinary Surgeon for day patients and on the day of discharge for hospitalised patients. This will be followed up with a full written report within 5 working days, unless test results are pending. We are committed to ensuring that you are kept informed about the patients you have referred to us.

Client Expectations

We do ask that when a client is referred to us, they are given realistic expectations about the treatment and procedures that can be performed. The Equine Referral Hospital is self-funded and is non-profit making. As a referral hospital, however, the costs of treatment can be a lot higher than first opinion practice and clients need to be aware of this. Deposits for treatment will be asked for. Direct insurance claims are often possible but must be prearranged in advance by contacting the reception team on 01707 666297.
