The College's extensive Hawkshead Campus (telephone: 01707 666 333) is near Potters Bar in Hertfordshire. The Main Site in Hawkshead Lane is the principal location for:

The Boltons Park site on Hawkshead Road provides the College's farm-related facilities. The College's veterinary nursing course is currently based there.

Travel News for Visitors to the Royal Veterinary College

Visitors are urged to follow the roads outlined in grey on the map and approach the Main Campus along Hawkshead Lane from the A1000.

From the M25 leave at Junction 24 and take the A111 (Southgate Road) to Potters Bar. At the first main junction and traffic lights, turn right onto the A1000 towards Hatfield. Follow the A1000 through Potters Bar and then follow the signs to the Vet College (a left turn onto Hawkshead Road and then into Hawkshead Lane).

From the A1 take the A1001 Eastbound and then take the A1000 Southbound and follow the signs to the Vet College (a right turn onto Hawkshead Road and then into Hawkshead Lane).

 

By Road

Approaching the campus from the south, most visitors enter the local road system from either Junction 23 (with the A1(M)) or Junction 24 of the M25. From the north, follow the Veterinary College road signs in to Hawkshead Lane for the Hawkshead Main Site.

Larger vehicles (such as those carrying animals or making deliveries) are urged to approach (and leave) the College's Hawkshead Main Site from the east - such as from Junction 24 of the M25 then via the A1000 through Potters Bar to Hawkshead Road, then into Hawkshead Lane.

Cyclists and pedestrians are urged to take particular care in the generally narrow and unlit local by-ways around the campus.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is Potters Bar. To get from Potters Bar station:

Trains generally run every thirty minutes from London King's Cross, at 06 and 36 minutes past the hour, and the journey takes about 15 minutes.

By Air

When arriving at one of London's international airports, the following guidance will help your onwards journey to RVC Hawkshead.

From London City Airport (Docklands)

London City Airport receives mainly domestic and European flights. There is a shuttle bus which runs from the airport into London's Liverpool Street station every 10 minutes from 0615 to 1000 hrs every day. There is no nighttime shuttle bus service (the airport is closed from 10.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m.)

By Train: From Liverpool Street Train Station, travel on Circle/Hammersmith & City/Metropolitan Underground Lines to London Kings Cross station. Take a train (WAGN services) to travel to Potters Bar (trains run every 30 minutes during normal working hours with a reduced service at the weekend).

By Car: journey by car from London City Airport to RVC Hawkshead would take approximately 1 - 2 hrs depending on traffic.

From London Heathrow Airport

Heathrow Airport has different terminals so each terminal must be identified upon arrival to successfully complete and time your journey.

By Train: the Heathrow Express train runs from London Heathrow to Padington Station every 15 minutes, starting at 0510 in the morning through to 1130 hrs at night (Platforms 6 and 7 at Padington). For enquiries about this service, please telephone 0845 6001515. From Padington station, travel on the Underground's Circle Line to London Kings Cross: take a train (WAGN services) to Potters Bar By Car: take the M25 (towards Watford) and travel for approximately 45 minutes to Junction 23 (A1(M) and the South Mimms Motorway Services area). Turn off and follow signs for Royal Veterinary College (approximately 5 minutes).

By Coach: Coach journeys are available running from Heathrow to Watford (about 30 minutes away from Potters Bar). For National coach enquires telephone 08705 808080 or visit www.nationalexpress.com.

By Tube: take the London Underground's Picadilly Line from the airport through to London Kings Cross. Take a train (WAGN services) to Potters Bar. Alternatively if you take the Piccadily Line as far as Cockfosters, you will have to find a taxi to get to the Hawkshead Campus (the fare will be about £10).

From London Gatwick Airport

By Train: The Gatwick Express trains (a premium price, limited stop service) run from Gatwick Airport to London Victoria railway station every 15 minutes from 0500 hrs to 1200, Monday to Friday and at 0030, 0130, 0230, 0330, 0430 during the early hours of the morning. The journey is approximately 30 minutes. For enquiries regarding the Gatwick Express please telephone 0990 301 530. From Victoria Station, take the Underground's Victoria Line to Kings Cross. Take a train (WAGN services) to Potters Bar.

Alternatively, take a ThamesLink train from Gatwick Airport either to Kings Cross and then change for the Potters Bar train as above, or to Finsbury Park from where you can catch the WAGN train service through to Potters Bar. This route is slower but cheaper than the Gatwick Express.

By Car: travel north on the M23 to the M25 (junction 8). Then take the M25 round to Junction 23 (clockwise seems to be a smoother journey). From Junction 23 of the M25 follow the road signs to the RVC. Allow 2 hours for whole journey.

From London Stanstead Airport

By Train: the Stanstead Sky Trains services run from Stanstead Airport to London's Liverpool Street station every 15 minutes Monday to Friday from 0600 hrs to 2359 hrs. At the weekend the trains run every 30 minutes from 0600 hrs to 2359 hrs. The journey takes 45 minutes on the fast train or there is a slower train which takes 65 minutes. For Skytrain enquiries please telephone 0345 484950. From Liverpool Street station take the Underground on the Circle Line to Kings Cross. At Kings Cross, take a WAGN services train to Potters Bar Station (trains run every 30 minutes Monday to Friday).

By Car: from Stanstead Airport (Junction 8) travel southbound on the M11 to junction 27 on the M25. Then travel anti-clockwise on the M25 to Junction 23 and turn off - follow the signs to the Royal Veterinary College. The whole journey should take approximately 60 minutes.

From Luton Airport

By Train: trains run through to London Kings Cross. Change there to take a WAGN train service to Potters Bar, as above. The Thameslink railway line runs from Luton Airport Parkway Station (Bay No. 4) from 0500 hrs to 1200 hrs approximately every 10 minutes. Various stops include St Albans and Elstree/Borehamwood which are both approximately 15 minutes drive from RVC Hawkshead - but the taxi fare to Hawkshead campus can be prohibitive and it is often cheaper to travel in to Kings Cross. Not all trains will stop at all stations, so please check before boarding.

By Car: travel southbound from Luton Airport on the M1 to Junction 21a on the M25. Then travel clockwise on the M25 to Junction 23 and turn off. Follow road signs to RVC Hawkshead. Allow approximately 50 minutes for the journey.
