RVC Alumnus Association (RVCAA)
RVCAA is a self-funded association of graduates, staff and supporters of the RVC. We are run independently from the College. Membership is currently approximately 650. Members of Council range from a 1998 graduate to a 1946 alumnus.
Our Council is composed of volunteers from our membership with our officers appointed from Council. Current officers are: President, Peter Lane (1960); Secretary, David Noakes (1961); Treasurer, Dick Lane (1953); Newsletter editor, Trevor Turner (1958). The current Student Union Society President and Senior Vice-President are also invited members of Council, as is the College Principal.
What do we do?
Funding Activities
A large chunk of our present annual subscription is allocated to the RVC Student Access or "Hardship" Fund. In a recent poll of membership over 91% agreed with this use of funds. In addition we also contribute towards various student activities and events, travel grants and equipment. We donate, as funds allow, to the College for books, equipment, appeals and memorials.
Undergraduate Education
We are very conscious that general practice is still the largest veterinary employer. We therefore try to act as the graduate voice on matters relating to veterinary education and to higher education in general. This is through representation on various committees at the RVC. These include College Council, the Teaching Committee, Student Selection committee and Practical Clinical Studies Committee.
RVCAA Council has recently advised on a New Graduate Employers Questionnaire; and our members have been invited to complete a pilot questionnaire.
To support the student lobby we attended Parliament to raise awareness of undergraduates' financial hardship.
Communication
We publish two newsletters a year and these, together with our reunions, ensure we maintain links between members and also between the College, graduates and undergraduates. Wherever possible we support SUS and Animal Care Trust events.
EMS
We assist in the provision of extra-mural study for undergraduates. Our members are encouraged to provide EMS free of board and lodging charges for RVC students. From time to time our members are invited to comment on EMS in general and on students' approach to recording techniques and cases.
