Flora London Marathon 26th April 2009
Update:
The Animal Care Trust's marathon team this year consisted of four very brave runners, Craig Dearman, Marc Quinn, Sally Wilkes and Fabio Cilli. They all did a wonderful job with their fundraising, managing a very impressive £4482.87 between them.
It was an unusually warm day for this year's race meaning that the runners not only had to contend with 26 miles of running but also blazing heat. The warmer weather played havoc with predicted finishing times but our brilliant runners finished with times of;
Sally Wilkes: 4hrs:15mins:16secs.
Fabio Cilli: 4hrs16mins:32secs.
Marc Quinn: 4hrs:47mins:49secs.
Craig Dearman: 6hrs:15mins:21secs.
We are so very proud and grateful to our team of runners for all the effort they have put in, not only for training but for fundraising as well. All the money the runners have raised will go towards equipping the College's hospitals with the most up-to-date equipment and training so that we can continue to provide excellent treatment for the animals in our care.
Our runners for the 2009 marathon kept us up to date on their training and have also gave us an insight into why they wanted to run for the Trust
BUPA Great North Run 5th October 2008
We had a team of 20 runners who took part in this years Great North Run for the Animal Care Trust.
Felicity Bullamore and Phil Caddick took part in this year’s BUPA Great North Run to raise money for the Trust. Felicity is an alumna of the Royal Veterinary College.
After fighting their way through the crowds of charity runners they finished in an impressive 2 hrs and six minutes and raised a fantastic £661.00 for the Trust, thanks to sponsorship from their family and friends.
Felicity and Phil are pictured with their dogs Ollie and Indie

Carolyn and Steph Lace also ran for the trust finishing in a time of 2hr 13mins which was excellent for their first half marathon.
They are pictured at the end of the race.
David Hart also ran for the trust and finished in a time of 2 hours and 39 minutes and raised £250.00 for the trust.
We would like to thank all of our runners that took part in the race to raise money for the Trust.
Well Done To You All!
Summer Raffle - 1st August 2008
You had to be in it to win it!
The draw has now taken place for this year's Summer Raffle.
Congratulations to all the winners and a big Thank You to everyone who bought a ticket and supported the Animal Care Trust.
Flora London Marathon - Sunday 13th April 2008
We had a team of nine runners who took part in this year’s Flora London Marathon. It was a wet and windy day but all our runners managed to complete this challenging event. We would like to thank them so much for their support and congratulate them on such a fantastic achievement - WELL DONE!
The RVC team consists of:
Annabel Berry (left), is running her first marathon and has set herself the target of finishing in 4 and a half hours.
Having grown up in a sweet shop in Andover, Annabel was never very sporty and was always last to be picked for school sports teams. She is now a keen martial artist, with a green belt in Taekwon-do, but had no distance running experience until she started training last November. Annabel has recently completed the Reading half marathon in 2 hours 11 minutes and has already run 225 miles this year in preparation for the big day.
Annabel is supporting the Animal Care Trust after the eyesight of her 11 yr old Tibetan Terrier, Scooter, was saved by vets at the Royal Veterinary College. Scooter was diagnosed with diabetes a year ago and was soon blind with diabetic cataracts. However, after being referred to the College’s Queen Mother Hospital for Animals, vets successfully managed to remove a cataract in Scooter’s left eye giving him back not only his sight, but his confidence and quality of life.
Annabel said “everyone has been so supportive, especially Scooter’s auntie Sue, who walks him whilst I work and has raised over £100 so far for the RVC. My fundraising is going well and Scooter’s local vets, who are RVC graduates, also have a collecting tin to help raise funds. The marathon will be a lifetime’s challenge for me since I am not a natural runner, and it makes it even more important to me to be able to run for something I truly believe in!”
Barbara Wieland, a Lecturer in Veterinary Epidemiology, ran her first London Marathon last year and enjoyed it so much she is keen to do it again! Having got back from climbing a 6000m peak in Nepal at the end of last year, Barbara is motivated to keep up her fitness and get out training.
Imogen Johns, who has recently joined the College as an Equine Medicine Lecturer, is keen to support the Trust as she believes “fundraising is an important way that we can improve facilities and teaching for students, clients and of course most importantly, our patients.” Imogen has run 4 marathons in the past three years as well as many half marathons and triathlons. She believes that may have got her the job here as the first question Professor Quintin McKellar (RVC principal and a marathon entrant last year) asked her at her interview was ‘What’s your best marathon time?’!

Stuart Head, whose wife Katherine works for the College, is a very keen runner. To run the Marathon would be a great personal achievement for him and to raise money at the same time would make it even better. Stuart is running with friends Andy and Ben (right). Having watched the Marathon on television many times, they felt it was time to don their trainers to complete this once in a lifetime achievement together.
Stuart says that “the support we have received so far has been fantastic and money being pledged to the Animal Care Trust really motivates us and makes pounding the street worthwhile. We are all great lovers of animals and think that the work the Royal Veterinary College does is invaluable”.
Ella Barber and Alice Frankum are both 4th year veterinary students here at the College and they are running along side Alice’s sister Catherine. All three are raising money for The Animal Care Trust.

BUPA Great North Run - Sunday 30th September 2007
A group of runners from Redcar, North Yorkshire, supported the Animal Care Trust in this year’s Great North Run which was held on Sunday 30th September 2007.
The team said “We are running for the Royal Veterinary College Animal Care Trust to raise funds for the excellent work they carry out in animal welfare. We all have a special interest in this charity as some of us own rescue dogs, an ex guide dog and a pug with only one eye!”
We would like to say a huge thank you to the whole team for their efforts in not only running this great half marathon, but for also raising over £1000 for the Trust.

The Flora London Marathon - Sunday 22nd April 2007
The Royal Veterinary College Animal Care Trust had 8 runners in this year’s Flora London Marathon. Firstly the RVC Marathon Team, along with Harvey Reed, Caroline Mayo and Colin Hares. Our runners took to the streets and did a fantastic job, considering the high temperatures. We are extremely proud of them all and thank them for their efforts to raise money for the Trust.
The RVC Marathon Team
Professor Quintin McKellar, Principal of the Royal Veterinary College, led a team of RVC staff in this year’s Flora London Marathon, held on Sunday April 22nd. Running alongside the Principal was Professor David Church – Chair of Small Animal Studies, Mike Archer - Equine Surgeon and Emma Mitchell -Lecturer in Equine Medicine. Unfortunately Dr Alan Wilson - Reader in Veterinary Basic Sciences, who was due to run had to pull out due to an injury.
Meet the Team....
Professor Quintin McKellar says that “now at 48, I like to keep fit by rowing with a bunch of geriatrics at the Broxbourne Rowing Club. Last year, we won both the National Veteran Rowing Championships and Henley Veteran Championships in the over 40’s category.” Distance running presents Quintin another challenge, but having already completed three other marathons, he is hoping to complete the London Marathon in less than 4 hours. Preparation for the run is going well and he considers that the muddy lanes of Hertfordshire offer a great training ground. As the Principal of the RVC, which he claims is “the best job in the world!” Quintin is raising money for the Animal Care Trust to help build the best referral veterinary hospital in Europe. The hospital will provide fantastic care for sick animals and at the same time provide the best training for the next generation of vets and nurses. Quintin believes the RVC has “exceptional students and we should educate them in outstanding facilities”.
Result - 4hrs 25mins
Professor David Church joined the RVC in 2001 from The University of Sydney. He has always enjoyed outdoor activities but in particular surfing and running in natural surroundings, although he has had to swap the beaches of Australia for the bridleways of Hertfordshire. David has never run a Marathon before, but has always harboured a desire to run one before he gets too old – but ponders, “Have I waited too long? What better way to find out than to run the Flora London Marathon and raise money for the Royal Veterinary College, an extremely worthy organisation which supports the health and welfare of animals both directly and indirectly”.
Result - 4hrs 57mins

Emma Mitchell says “I caught the marathon bug while completing my residency in the USA as a way of avoiding becoming the size of a house!” Since then she has met so many interesting people while out running and the London marathon has always been on her list to complete. She has already run the New York and Washington Marathons.
Result - 4hrs 34mins
Mike Archer grew up on a farm in Kenya where most social gatherings involved sport, so he has always enjoyed exercise and the outdoors. Mike ran the Portland Marathon, Oregon in 1989 and this will be his third time running the London Marathon. Mike says “I will be giving my best effort not to let age slow me down, although I expect the opposite. The atmosphere and crowd support is great and I am already looking forward to that moment of reaching the finish line and being able to stop!” In June Mike is heading to New Zealand to try something new. Having worked at the Royal Veterinary College for seven years, Mike hopes the money he raises for the Animal Care Trust will be a great thank you for all the fantastic support the College has given him.
Result - 3hrs 24mins
Dr Alan Wilson is a member of Victoria Park Running Club. Alan has previously run competitively over short distances but ran his last Marathon over 20 years ago in Glasgow. He now feels is an “old slob with multiple injuries and will be amazed if he makes it to the start line!” However, if he does make it there, Alan is aiming to complete the run in three and a half hours.
Result - Injured -Did not run
Please show your appreciation of our teams effort by sponsoring them online at www.justgiving.com/rvcteam
Other Runners....
Harvey Reed from Tooting has never run a marathon before, but promised himself he would attempt it before he was 40 so this is his last chance! Harvey aims to complete this years London Marathon in 4½ hours. It has been a busy year for Harvey who got married in January. His Marathon training was put on hold whilst on honeymoon in Thailand so he is now making up for it on Tooting Common.
Harvey is raising money for the Royal Veterinary College Animal Care Trust in memory of his cat, Penny. Penny had to have her leg amputated due to bone cancer but she lived for a further two years, dying only of old age.
Result - 5hrs 27mins
Anyone wishing to sponsor Harvey can go online at www.justgiving.com/qandshoe
Colin Hares from Andover is in to all kinds of sport but believes long distance running is simply the best exercise and a great stress buster. Having previously run two London Marathons, Colin will be happy to complete this year's Marathon in less than 4 hours. Colin says “ I work in property, soI enjoy looking at all the buildings and landmarks along the Marathon route – It’s fantastic!” He urges people to “come along and cheer the runners along, the atmosphere is absolutely electric and a marvellous day out for all the family”. Colin is raising money for the Royal Veterinary College as he fully supports the high quality international research conducted by the College as “Animals like humans, deserve the best medical attention and not enough money is spent pursuing this very worthwhile goal”.

Result - 4hrs 46mins
Caroline Mayo from Reading ran the London Marathon in 2004 and 2005 but had to pull out last year due to an injury. She is back this year and is hoping to beat her personal best by completing the distance in 4 hours. Caroline is training for the run with her Springer Spaniel, Pen, a retired Customs and Excise dog who has epilepsy. Pen insists on pulling Caroline around the village and back, but still wants to play when they get home. The trainee Science Teacher has given a home to several retired working dogs with health problems and wants to raise money for the Animal Care Trust to help other animals, to ensure they have better quality and longer lives even though she can’t adopt them all!
Every penny raised will go to the Animal Care Trust. The funds will be used to purchase much needed equipment for the College's hospitals and to help build new facilities such as the Phase 3 Development of the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals.
Sponsored Dog Walk - Sunday 11th March
"Thank you so much to everyone who attended the Charity Dog Walk that raised money for the Royal Veterinary College Animal Care Trust.
The weather was perfect, showing the parks in their full glory for the family day out. The children enjoyed themselves by spotting different kinds of wildlife and all the dogs were gorgeous and well behaved. Thank you once again to everyone who came, entered the raffle and bought some gifts. All your kind efforts, on the day and through sponsorship have not only helped us to raise over £400 for such a worth while cause but should go along way to getting us a good mark in our course.
Lastly I would just like to give a special mention to all our volunteers who helped out on the day, the Animal Care Trust for their advice and support and to Hertsmere Park Division for letting us use their parks. I hope you all enjoyed yourself".
Stephanie Mitchell
Event Organiser.
Please Note:
This event was organised by Stephanie Mitchell, a fourth year Business Studies Student at the University of Hertfordshire, who used to work for the Animal Care Trust. The walk was part of her final year assignment, to organise a fundraising event for a local charity. The Royal Veterinary College was simply the beneficiary.
